Understanding eating disorders

Eating Disorders Are Complex. You Deserve Care That Understands the Whole Person.

Compassionate support that looks beyond food and weight.

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that can affect your emotional well-being, physical health, and the way you think and feel about yourself.

Although they often involve thoughts or behaviors related to eating, exercise, or body image, their causes are complex. Biological, emotional, psychological, and social factors can all play a role.

Eating disorders can affect people of any age, gender, background, or body size. Their seriousness cannot be determined by appearance alone.

At Boca Raton Psychology Associates, we focus on understanding the individual behind the symptoms and the experiences that contribute to unhealthy patterns.

You do not have to wait until your symptoms become severe before asking for help.

“Your experience matters. Your well-being matters. You deserve support.”

Eating disorders and related concerns

Understanding the Different Types of Eating Disorders

Different experiences. Individualized treatment. Compassionate guidance.

Eating disorders take different forms. Recognizing the patterns and emotional concerns involved is an important part of determining appropriate care.

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa may involve restrictive eating, intense fears surrounding weight gain, and difficulties with body image. It can carry significant physical and psychological risks.

Therapy may help patients explore fears, rigid thought patterns, and emotional concerns within a treatment plan that includes appropriate medical care.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa involves recurrent binge-eating episodes accompanied by behaviors intended to compensate for eating.

Support may focus on understanding distressing patterns, developing emotional coping strategies, and working toward safer behaviors with coordinated clinical care.

Binge-Eating Disorder

Binge-eating disorder involves recurring episodes of eating with a sense of losing control and significant distress.

Therapy can help explore emotional triggers, self-critical thoughts, and more effective ways of responding to stress and difficult feelings.

Disordered Eating and Body Image Concerns

You may experience anxiety about meals, restrictive eating habits, or ongoing distress related to appearance even without meeting the criteria for a particular diagnosis.

These concerns deserve attention. A professional assessment can help clarify the next step.

Recognizing when to seek support

When Your Relationship With Food or Body Image Begins Affecting Your Life

Eating disorders do not always look the way people expect. You or someone you care about may benefit from professional evaluation if you notice:

  • Persistent anxiety, guilt, or distress around food and eating
  • Rigid food rules or restrictive eating patterns
  • Episodes of eating accompanied by a loss of control
  • Intense dissatisfaction with body image or appearance
  • Withdrawal from meals, social events, or everyday activities
  • Compensatory behaviors, including excessive exercise
  • Increasing secrecy, shame, isolation, or emotional distress

These signs do not establish a diagnosis. Eating disorder concerns warrant professional assessment, including medical evaluation when appropriate.

Compassionate care begins with being heard.

A private, friendly environment where your concerns are treated with respect.

Our therapeutic approach

Personalized, Evidence-Based Eating Disorder Therapy

Understanding the patterns. Developing practical skills. Supporting meaningful change.

Our clinicians consider your emotional experiences, thinking patterns, coping strategies, relationships, and treatment goals. Care is adapted to your clinical assessment and individual needs.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT-based strategies can help patients recognize connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, identify unhelpful beliefs, and practice alternative responses.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT-informed skills emphasize emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness when difficult emotions contribute to harmful patterns.

Mindfulness-Based Strategies

Mindfulness encourages greater awareness of internal experiences without immediately reacting to them. Patients can learn to recognize triggers and respond more thoughtfully.

Exploring Underlying Emotional Patterns

Therapy offers space to explore relationships, past experiences, self-beliefs, and emotional concerns that may influence behaviors and self-image.

Family Involvement When Appropriate

Parents and other loved ones may offer meaningful support. Decisions about involvement depend on clinical needs, consent, privacy, and the patient's age.

A Collaborative Treatment Plan

No single approach is right for everyone. Together, we evaluate goals, consider additional health professionals, and review whether outpatient treatment is an appropriate fit.

Helping You Find Balance and Inner Peace

Building a Better Future, One Session at a Time

Coordinated, comprehensive care

Eating Disorder Treatment Often Works Best With a Team Approach

Supporting both emotional and physical well-being.

Because eating disorders can affect physical health, treatment may require collaboration across several disciplines. With appropriate consent, we can coordinate with other professionals to support an appropriate care plan.

Medical Professionals

Medical providers can evaluate physical health, monitor complications, and help determine whether more intensive care is necessary.

Registered Dietitians

Experienced nutrition professionals can assess nutrition-related needs and support recovery-oriented goals.

Psychiatrists

Psychiatric assessment may help when medication or care for co-occurring mental health concerns is indicated.

Family and Support Systems

When appropriate, family involvement may improve communication and support outside of therapy sessions.

Care tailored to your clinical needs. Some patients need a more intensive level of care than outpatient therapy. When indicated, we can discuss assessment and referral options.

Questions, answered

Frequently Asked Questions About Eating Disorder Therapy

Clear answers to help you make an informed decision.

  • What is eating disorder therapy?

Eating disorder therapy is psychological treatment that helps people address thoughts, emotions, and behaviors associated with disordered eating. Depending on clinical needs, a treatment plan may also include medical monitoring, nutrition support, and family involvement.

  • How do I know if I need professional help for an eating disorder?

If concerns about food, eating, exercise, or body image are causing distress or interfering with daily life, professional evaluation may help. You do not need a formal diagnosis before asking for guidance. Medical assessment is also important because eating disorders can affect physical health.

  • Does the practice work with anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating concerns?

Our practice has experience working with individuals experiencing eating disorders and related concerns. We consider each patient's needs and whether outpatient therapy is clinically appropriate. Some people require specialized or more intensive treatment.

  • Can therapy help with anxiety and depression alongside an eating disorder?

Yes. Anxiety, depression, and eating disorder concerns may occur together. Therapy can address emotional distress, patterns of self-critical thinking, and difficulties with coping. Your clinician will tailor treatment to your assessment and goals.

  • Can parents participate in their teenager's eating disorder treatment?

Yes, when clinically appropriate. Parent participation can support adolescents receiving treatment. We consider clinical needs, age, confidentiality, and treatment goals when discussing family involvement.

  • Can I receive eating disorder therapy online?

Online appointments may be an option for patients whose needs can be addressed safely through virtual outpatient care. Your clinician can help consider medical and psychological factors before recommending this setting.

  • Do you work with doctors, dietitians, and psychiatrists?

When indicated, we recognize the importance of coordinated care with medical, nutritional, and psychiatric professionals. Appropriate consent and clinical needs guide this collaboration.

  • How long does eating disorder therapy take?

Treatment duration varies with symptom severity, medical concerns, individual circumstances, and response to treatment. Your clinician will discuss goals and review progress as care continues.

  • Do you accept insurance for eating disorder therapy?

We operate as an out-of-network practice and can provide a superbill for possible reimbursement based on your plan benefits. Reduced-rate packages may be available. Contact our office for details.
