Eating Disorders Treatment in Boca Raton

Eating disorders are a set of complex mental disorders that seriously impact physical and psychological health and social functioning. People with eating disorders suffer from severe disruptions in eating, such as extreme calorie restriction, overeating, and/or fixation with body appearance and weight. An eating disorder may also happen with an underlying psychological issue such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, or concealed trauma. Treatment from a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, and medical professionals, is often necessary. Fortunately, the Boca Raton Psychology Associates has broad experience managing and treating eating disorders in adolescents and adults.

Some basic facts on eating disorders

The stakes can’t be higher than for the eating-disordered patient. Eating disorders are the most lethal mental illness – more people die from eating disorders than depression and schizophrenia. The relapse rate for those who survive and receive treatment is 50-70%. It’s also one of the few illnesses where the patient consciously lies and tries to deceive their therapist. These facts make treating anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating a challenge.

Eating Disorder Therapy

We at the Boca Raton Psychology Associates feel that the best way to create lasting change is by helping our patients get to the root causes of their difficulties rather than merely treating the symptoms.

We look for the unconscious impulses that contribute to and help create the eating disorder to eliminate the need for eating and body image to play such an unhealthy role in the patient’s life.

We believe in a team approach to treatment where clinically indicated and have long-lasting and successful relationships with the best and most eating disorder-experienced nutritionists, internists, and psychiatrists.

These relationships are built on years of trust and facilitate open communication between all team members. Also, depending on the age and living situation of the patient, we use family therapy to help with eating disorder treatment.

An educated and prepared family can be vital to create long-lasting change.

It is estimated that about 30 million Americans (20 million women and 10 million men) struggle with eating disorders. Eight percent of females and 2% of males are affected at some point during their lives. Ninety five percent of eating disorders occur by age 25.
